Ingredients:
  • 1 package regular or quick active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (105°F to 115°F)
  • 1 1/2 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Gold Medal™ whole wheat flour
  • 2 tablespoons olive or vegetable oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Olive or vegetable oil
  • Cornmeal
  • 1 lb lean (at least 80%) ground beef, or ground pork, lamb or turkey
  • 1 large onion or 1 medium green bell pepper, chopped (1 cup)
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 can (8 oz) pizza sauce
  • 1 can (4 oz) sliced mushrooms, drained, or 1 can (4 oz) Old El Paso™ Chopped Green Chiles, drained
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella, Cheddar, Monterey Jack or brick cheese (8 oz)
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan or Romano cheese
Instructions:
  • In a medium bowl, mix together yeast and warm water until dissolved. Add all-purpose and whole wheat flour, 2 tablespoons of oil, and salt. Beat vigorously for 20 strokes. Allow the dough to rest for 20 minutes before proceeding with the instructions for either thin or thick crusts.
  • For thin crusts: Preheat oven to 425°F and move rack to lowest position. Grease 2 cookie sheets or 12-inch pizza pans with oil, then sprinkle with cornmeal. Divide dough in half and pat each into an 11-inch round on the prepared sheets. Bake for about 10 minutes until the crust just begins to brown.
  • For thick crusts: Preheat the oven to 375°F and move the rack to the lowest position. Grease 2 8-inch square pans with oil and sprinkle with cornmeal. Divide the dough in half and press each half into the bottom of the pan using floured fingers. Let it rise in a warm place for 30 to 45 minutes or until almost double in size. Bake uncovered for 20 to 22 minutes until the crust begins to brown.
  • While the crusts bake in the oven, sauté the beef, onion, Italian seasoning, and garlic in a 10-inch skillet over medium heat for 8 to 10 minutes until the beef is cooked through and the onion is tender. Remember to stir occasionally. Once done, drain the excess liquid. Next, spread the pizza sauce over the crusts, and then top with the beef mixture, mushrooms, and cheeses. Enjoy your delicious pizza!
  • Bake thin-crust pizzas at 425°F for around 10 minutes and thick-crust pizzas at 375°F for about 20 minutes, until the cheese is melted and the pizzas are bubbly.
