Make tasty low-sodium whole wheat bread in a Dutch oven for a cozy homemade treat.
Ingredients:
  • 1.5 cups warm water
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon agave nectar
  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
Instructions:
  • Microwave water in a measuring cup for 1 minute. Check with a food thermometer to ensure it's no hotter than 100°F (38°C). Stir in yeast and agave, then let it sit for 15 minutes until foamy.
  • In a large bowl, mix flour and salt together. Add the yeast mixture, then stir and knead briefly to combine. Cover the bowl and allow the dough to rise in a warm place until it has doubled in size, anywhere from overnight to 18 hours.
  • Transfer the dough onto a floured surface. Knead 5 to 10 times with floured hands. Shape the dough into a ball and allow it to rise while the oven preheats.
  • Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C) with a Dutch oven inside, allowing it to warm for 30 minutes.
  • Drop dough into the hot Dutch oven using floured hands, then cover it with the lid using potholders.
  • Bake in the hot oven for 30 minutes. Remove cover from Dutch oven and continue baking until bread is deep golden brown, for an additional 10 to 15 minutes. Allow to cool before serving.
