Delicious baklava made with layers of crispy phyllo dough, spiced nuts, and sweet honey syrup. Perfect for serving individual slices in cupcake papers.
Ingredients:
  • 1 pound chopped nuts
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 (16 ounce) package phyllo dough
  • 1 cup butter, melted
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 0.5 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) while you generously butter a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • Combine the nuts and cinnamon in a bowl. Cut the phyllo stack in half to fit the dish, then cover it with a damp cloth to prevent drying out while assembling the baklava.
  • Layer the bottom of the dish with 2 sheets of phyllo, generously brush with melted butter, sprinkle with 2 to 3 tablespoons of the nut mixture. Repeat layering until all ingredients are used, finishing with about 6 sheets of phyllo on top.
  • With a sharp knife, slice the baklava into 4 long rows, then diagonally 9 times to form 36 diamond shapes, ensuring you cut through all layers to the bottom.
  • Bake in the oven until crispy and golden brown, approximately 50 minutes.
  • Once the baklava is in the oven, in a small saucepan over medium heat, mix sugar and water and bring it to a boil. Add honey, vanilla, and lemon zest; lower the heat and let it simmer for 20 minutes.
  • Take the baklava out of the oven and generously drizzle syrup over it while it's still warm. Allow it to cool completely before indulging. Keep it uncovered until ready to serve.
