Easy English Trifle

Delicious trifle dessert with fruit cocktail, wine, sponge cake cubes, topped with custard and whipped cream. Fruit layer can be prepared in advance.
Ingredients:
  • 1 (6 ounce) package strawberry flavored Jell-O®
  • 0.5 cup wine
  • 1 (19 ounce) can fruit cocktail, drained
  • 16 ounces sponge cake, cut in cubes
  • 1 (3.5 ounce) package instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 1 (8 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
Instructions:
  • In a large glass bowl, mix gelatin with 2 cups of boiling water until fully dissolved.
  • Combine the wine, reserved fruit cocktail syrup, and cold water until you have 1 3/4 cups. Pour the mixture into the gelatin and stir until fully combined.
  • Gently fold in cubed cake and juicy fruit, then chill in the refrigerator for 4 to 5 hours.
  • Make the custard following the package instructions to yield 2 cups. Pour it over the gelatin mixture and chill in the fridge. Finish off with a dollop of whipped topping before serving.
