Create delicious homemade pizza sauce by simmering quality tomatoes with garlic, basil, and oregano for simplicity and maximum flavor.
Ingredients:
  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes, preferably San Marzano
  • 1 small yellow onion, halved and peeled, about 5 ounces
  • 6 cloves garlic, smashed
  • 2 sprigs basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano leaves, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more to taste
  • A pinch crushed red pepper flakes, plus more to taste
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil, to finish
Instructions:
  • Prepare the red sauce: In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, combine tomatoes, onion halves, garlic, basil, oregano, salt, and crushed red pepper. Simmer, partially covered, for 20 minutes to infuse flavors, stirring occasionally. Once done, remove from heat and let the sauce cool, allowing the aromatics to steep further.
  • Strain out aromatics: Once the sauce has cooled, strain out and discard the onion halves and basil sprigs. Leave the garlic cloves for a flavorful twist. Finish by stirring in the olive oil. Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning as needed.
  • Top your pizza crust with the delicious sauce or store it in the fridge in a sealed container for up to 1 week.
