Quick and delicious stovetop baked beans with molasses and brown sugar, perfect for any gathering.
Ingredients:
  • 1/2 pound thick-cut bacon, cut crosswise into 1/4-inch wide strips
  • 1/2 peeled onion, stem intact
  • 4 (15-ounce) cans navy beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 3 tablespoons molasses
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons dry mustard powder
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 cup water
Instructions:
  • In a large soup pot over medium heat, cook the bacon until browned, turning occasionally, for about 5 minutes. Remove and discard half of the excess fat. Reserve 1/4 cup of bacon for garnish.
  • Prepare the beans: Combine onion half, drained beans, tomato sauce, molasses, brown sugar, mustard powder, bay leaf, salt, and water in a pot. Simmer over medium heat until thickened, about 25-30 minutes. For a thicker sauce, uncover and cook for an additional 5 minutes. Discard onion half and bay leaf before serving.
  • To serve, dish out the beans from the pot or transfer them to a bowl, then sprinkle the saved bacon on top.
