Delicious homemade tuna noodle casserole with Cheddar cheese and fusilli pasta, made without canned soup.
Ingredients:
  • 3.25 cups fusilli pasta
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1.5 cups shredded Cheddar cheese, divided
  • 3 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 0.5 teaspoon mustard powder
  • salt and ground black pepper to taste
  • 15 ounces tuna packed in water, drained and flaked
  • 0.25 cup dry bread crumbs
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to a toasty 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook fusilli until al dente, about 12 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Stir in flour and keep stirring for about 1 minute. Remove from heat and slowly whisk in milk to prevent lumps. Return to heat and cook until slightly thickened, about 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Add 1/2 of the Cheddar cheese, lemon juice, mustard powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
  • Drain the fusilli and mix it gently into the sauce. Add the tuna and combine well. Transfer the mixture to an 8-inch casserole dish, sprinkle breadcrumbs on top, and finish with the remaining Cheddar cheese.
  • Bake until the cheese is bubbling and golden brown, for approximately 30 minutes in a preheated oven.
