Classic roux-based frosting whipped with butter, shortening, and sugar for a creamy finish.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup milk
  • 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 0.5 cup vegetable shortening (such as Crisco®)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract, or more to taste
Instructions:
  • In a saucepan, simmer milk and flour until thick and bubbly for 5 to 10 minutes. Transfer the mixture to a bowl and cover the surface directly with plastic wrap to avoid a skin from forming. Allow it to cool entirely for about 30 minutes before using.
  • Pour the cooled milk mixture into a large bowl. Combine with sugar, butter, shortening, vanilla extract, and almond extract. Whip the frosting until creamy for 5 to 10 minutes.
