Impress the kids with this stunning birthday cake creation!
Ingredients:
  • 3 x 340g packet golden buttercake cake mix or 3 quantities Homemade buttercake (see related recipe)
  • 40.00 ml large silver cachous
  • 1 tsp small silver cachous
  • 36.00 gm white sugar
  • 250g butter, softened
  • 450.00 gm icing sugar mixture
  • 41.20 gm milk
  • Pink food colouring
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced. Lightly grease a 7cm-deep, 28cm square cake pan, then line the base and sides with baking paper.
  • Follow the instructions on the packet mix or prepare the homemade cake batter as per the related recipe. Spread the batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes or until fully cooked. Let it sit in the pan for 15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Place the cake on a board and position the template on top. Carefully trace around the template using a serrated knife. Finally, display the star on the cake board.
  • Prepare icing: In a bowl, use an electric mixer to whip the butter until pale. Slowly incorporate the icing sugar mixture and milk, continuing to beat until fully combined.
  • Color icing a delicate pale pink. Generously coat the top and sides of the cake with the pink icing. Place large cachous along the perimeter of the cake. Create a star shape in the center of the cake using more large cachous. Fill the center of the star with a mix of large and small cachous.
  • In a snap-lock bag, combine 1 tablespoon sugar with 1 drop of pink coloring. Seal the bag and shake vigorously, distributing the color evenly to achieve pale pink sugar. Repeat with the remaining sugar using 3 drops of coloring for a darker shade. Sprinkle the dark pink sugar over the cake and finish by topping with the pale pink sugar for a marbled effect.
  • Wrap a 40cm ribbon around the dowel, ensuring it is secure. Tie the remaining ribbon around the top of the dowel, creating a decorative finish. Gently press the dowel into the cake to form a sturdy handle. Present and serve the cake with style.
