Authentic Native American fry bread tacos with savory ground beef chili, cheese, crisp lettuce, and juicy tomatoes.
Ingredients:
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon white sugar
  • 1.5 cups lukewarm water
  • 2 cups oil for frying, or as needed
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans, drained
  • 1 (1.25 ounce) package chili seasoning mix
  • 2 cups chopped iceberg lettuce
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
Instructions:
  • Combine flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt in a large bowl, whisk until well mixed. Gradually stir in water until a slightly sticky dough forms. Let the dough rest while you preheat the oil.
  • Preheat oil in a deep fryer or large saucepan to 375°F (190°C).
  • Divide the dough into 6 equal portions and shape each into palm-sized round discs.
  • Fry dough discs individually in hot oil until golden brown on the bottom, around 2 minutes. Flip with tongs and cook until the other side is golden brown, for about 1 more minute. Drain the fry bread on a paper towel-lined plate.
  • Preheat a skillet over medium heat. Brown and crumble ground beef in the hot skillet for 5 to 7 minutes. Mix in kidney beans and chili seasoning; cook until heated through, about 5 minutes.
  • Arrange the fry bread on individual plates and generously top each with chili mixture, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and a dollop of sour cream.
