Indian Fry Bread Tacos: Quick and simple recipe using self-rising flour and buttermilk for crispy fry bread. Top with zesty ground beef and bean mixture, finished with your favorite taco toppings.
Ingredients:
  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 0.25 onion, chopped
  • 0.5 (1.25 ounce) package spicy chili seasoning mix
  • 1 (15 ounce) can ranch-style beans
  • 1 (10 ounce) can diced tomatoes with green chile peppers
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes
  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups vegetable oil for frying, or as needed
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to a toasty 200 degrees F (95 degrees C).
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, sauté ground beef and onion until beef is browned and crumbly, approximately 10 minutes. Remove any excess grease by draining.
  • Add the chili seasoning mix, ranch-style beans, and diced tomatoes with green chilies to the pot. Allow the mixture to come to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer until thick, about 10 minutes. Let it simmer while you complete the rest of the recipe.
  • Combine self-rising flour and buttermilk in a bowl until a sticky dough forms. Take about 1/4 cup of dough, gently shape it into a 5-inch circle on a floured surface, and continue with the rest of the dough in the same way.
  • In a heavy skillet, warm vegetable oil to 400 degrees F (205 degrees C).
  • Fry dough circle in hot oil until golden brown on both sides, about 3 minutes per side. The bread will puff up as it cooks. Drain on paper towels and keep warm in the oven while frying the rest of the dough.
  • Serve the ground beef mixture over the fried bread for a delicious meal.
