French onion meatballs with Gruyere onion sauce over creamy mashed potatoes.
Ingredients:
  • 1 egg
  • 0.25 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 0.5 cup panko bread crumbs
  • 0.5 pound 80% lean ground beef
  • 1 (1.4 ounce) package dry French onion soup mix (such as Knorr®), divided
  • 1 cup water, divided
  • 1 tablespoon heavy whipping cream
  • 0.5 cup grated Gruyere cheese
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and place a wire rack in a baking sheet.
  • In a bowl, whisk together eggs, oregano, and 1 tablespoon of water. Add panko and ground beef, then sprinkle half of the French onion mix on top. Mix until fully combined, shape into meatballs, and arrange them on the baking sheet.
  • Cook the meatballs in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes, until they are fully cooked.
  • While you wait, combine the rest of the French onion mix in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in 1/4 cup water until fully combined and let it thicken. Then, whisk in another 1/4 cup water and let it thicken again. Repeat this process two more times until all the water is used. Stir in the cream and Gruyere cheese until the cheese is melted. Serve the cheese sauce with meatballs.
