Elegant chicken meatballs in French onion sauce, gooey Gruyere cheese topping - perfect for entertaining.
Ingredients:
  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • 0.5 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 (1 ounce) package dry French onion soup mix
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 medium onions, thinly sliced
  • 0.33333334326744 cup red wine
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1.5 cups beef broth
  • 0.5 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 6 ounces Gruyere cheese, shredded
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Combine ground chicken, bread crumbs, egg, onion soup mix, and garlic in a bowl, ensuring they are thoroughly mixed. Shape the mixture into sixteen 1 1/2-inch meatballs.
  • In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter until sizzling. Add onions and sugar, saute for about 12 minutes until the onions are beautifully softened.
  • Heat olive oil in a sizzling skillet, sear meatballs until golden brown on all sides, about 4 minutes.
  • Place the skillet with the meatballs in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 15 minutes until meatballs are cooked through. Remember to check halfway through and flip if needed to ensure even cooking.
  • Pour a generous amount of red wine into the onions, season with salt and pepper, then stir well. Cook over medium heat for 3 minutes. Add beef broth and thyme, bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Gradually mix in flour, stirring constantly until slightly thickened, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Take the meatballs out of the oven, drizzle with the flavorful onion sauce, generously layer with Gruyere cheese, and bake until gooey and golden, approximately 5 minutes.
