Indulgent German Chocolate Layer Cake with fudgy layers, sweet coconut-pecan filling, and rich chocolate frosting. Rated best ever by reviewers. A decadent and impressive dessert that will surely impress!
Ingredients:
  • 1 box Betty Crocker™ Delights Super Moist™ German Chocolate Cake Mix
  • Water, vegetable oil and eggs called for on cake mix box
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1 package (7 oz) flaked coconut (2 2/3 cups)
  • 2 cups chopped pecans
  • 3 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1/2 cup from 1 tub (16 oz) Betty Crocker™ Rich & Creamy Chocolate Frosting
Instructions:
  • Preheat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pan). Grease only the bottoms of 2 (9-inch) round cake pans with shortening. Prepare and bake cake mix according to package instructions for 9-inch round pans. Allow to cool for 10 minutes before removing from pans onto cooling racks. Let them cool completely for about 1 hour.
  • Combine sugar, butter, milk, and egg yolks in a 3-quart heavy saucepan. Simmer over medium heat, stirring frequently, for 9 to 10 minutes until thickened. Remove from heat and mix in coconut, pecans, and vanilla. Cool for about 1 hour before serving.
  • Slice each cake layer in half. Place the first layer, cut side up, on a serving plate. Spread approximately 1 1/3 cups of filling on top. Add the second layer and spread another 1 1/3 cups of filling. Place the third cake layer on top and finish by spreading the remaining filling.
  • Using a serrated knife, slice the remaining cake layer into 1 1/2-inch-wide strips, then cut the strips into irregular pieces. Arrange the cake pieces in a random pattern on top of the filling, gently pressing them into the cake to fit closely together. For best results, refrigerate the cake for several hours before serving.
  • Place the frosting in a small microwavable bowl. Microwave uncovered on High for 10 to 15 seconds until it's thin enough to drizzle. Drizzle the frosting over the top of the cake and store it loosely covered in the refrigerator.
