Indulgent 2-layer bars made with German chocolate cake mix, butter, and rich caramel.
Ingredients:
  • 1 (18.25 ounce) package German chocolate cake mix
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 egg
  • 0.5 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 pound individually wrapped caramels, unwrapped
  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Mix together 1/2 cup of butter with the cake mix and egg in a medium bowl until well blended. The mixture should be crumbly. Press evenly into a 10x15 inch jellyroll pan.
  • After baking for 10 minutes in the preheated oven, allow it to cool for an additional 10 minutes before serving.
  • In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the remaining 1/2 cup of butter with evaporated milk and caramels until smooth, stirring occasionally. Pour the mixture over the baked crust, rotating the pan for an even coating.
  • Place the dish back into the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes until it is bubbling all over. Let it cool, then drizzle with icing and allow it to set before cutting into squares.
  • Prepare the icing by combining confectioners' sugar, water, and vanilla until smooth. Adjust thickness by adding more water for a thinner consistency or more confectioners' sugar for a thicker consistency.
