Giant French toast for a crowd- perfect for a fun and easy lunch with loved ones.
Ingredients:
  • 50g butter, at room temperature
  • 321.88 gm milk
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 ciabatta, split lengthways
  • 23.40 gm Dijon mustard
  • 200g sliced ham from the bone
  • 187.50 ml coarsely grated vintage cheddar
  • Green salad, to serve
Instructions:
  • In a small saucepan over medium-high heat, melt 30g butter until it turns a light golden color. Remove from heat and stir in flour. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Add garlic and bay leaf, then cook and stir for 3-5 minutes until the sauce boils and thickens slightly. Season to taste.
  • Preheat the grill on high and place a large baking tray lined with foil. Toast the base and top of the ciabatta under the grill for 1-2 minutes on each side until golden.
  • Preheat your oven to 200°C (180°C fan-forced) and place the base cut-side up on a baking tray. Spread the rest of the butter and mustard on the base, then top it with ham. Spoon three-quarters of the white sauce over it and sprinkle with 1/4 cup of cheddar. Add the bread top and spoon the rest of the white sauce over it, keeping it centered as it will spread during baking. Finish by sprinkling the remaining cheddar on top. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown. Serve with a side salad.
