Delicious holiday treats perfect for eating or gifting!
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups full-flavor molasses
  • 2/3 cup water
  • 6 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Drinking straw
  • 8 pretzel sticks, cut into 1-inch lengths
  • Powdered sugar
  • Betty Crocker™ green decorating icing
  • Betty Crocker™ Holiday Décor holly berry sprinkles
  • Gold string
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 4 to 5 tablespoons half-and-half
  • Food color, if desired
Instructions:
  • Combine brown sugar, shortening, molasses, and cold water in a large bowl until smooth. Add flour, baking soda, ginger, salt, allspice, cloves, and cinnamon. Cover and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours.
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F and lightly grease a cookie sheet. Roll the dough out on a floured surface to 1/2 inch thickness. Use a knife or 2 1/2-inch cookie cutters to shape the dough into squares or circles for the base of the birdhouses and hearts for the roofs.
  • Place the heart shape upside down to overlap with the square or circle. Using the end of a drinking straw, create a hole in the center of the birdhouse base for the door and at the top of the roof for hanging. Position them about 1 1/2 inches apart on a cookie sheet.
  • Bake for approximately 15 minutes or until the surface springs back when touched. While still warm, gently insert a pretzel stick just below the door hole to create a perch. Transfer from the baking sheet and allow to cool completely.
  • Combine 4 cups of powdered sugar with vanilla and just the right amount of half-and-half for your preferred spreading consistency in a medium bowl. Add food coloring to achieve desired tint. Use this frosting to frost the cookie tops (roofs) and dust with powdered sugar. Finish decorating with icing and sprinkles. String gold pieces through the holes at the tops of the birdhouses and knot them to create hangers.
