Decadent filo pastry dessert with golden syrup and creamy custard, a nostalgic treat for all.
Ingredients:
  • 8 sheets filo pastry
  • 100g butter, melted, cooled
  • 750ml (3 cups) milk
  • 135g (1 cup) custard powder
  • 80ml (1/3 cup) golden syrup, plus extra, to drizzle
  • 2.50 gm ground nutmeg
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan forced and grease a 20cm round fluted tart tin with removable base. Place the prepared tin on a baking tray. Brush a sheet of filo with melted butter, fold in half, and place in the tin, letting the corners hang over the sides. Repeat with the rest of the filo and butter, rotating each sheet slightly to create the pastry shell. Brush any remaining butter on top. Bake for 20 minutes until golden, then allow to cool.
  • In a saucepan over high heat, bring the milk to a boil. Lower the heat to low and whisk in the custard powder and golden syrup. Cook and stir for 2-3 minutes until very thick.
  • Fill the pastry shell with the creamy custard filling. Top with a sprinkle of fragrant nutmeg. Chill in the fridge for 2 hours, or until perfectly set.
  • Serve drizzled with extra golden syrup.
