Date and golden syrup baked custard

Decadent date and golden syrup dessert.
Ingredients:
  • 187.50 ml finely chopped dried dates
  • 53.60 gm golden syrup
  • 515.00 gm milk
  • 4 eggs
  • 40.00 gm caster sugar
  • 1.25 gm ground cinnamon
  • pure cream, to serve
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 160°C/140°C while you generously grease a 4 cup-capacity ovenproof dish.
  • In a bowl, mix dates with half of the golden syrup. Sprinkle this date mixture over the base of the prepared dish. In a saucepan over medium-high heat, bring the milk to a boil. While the milk is heating, whisk eggs, sugar, and the rest of the golden syrup in a heatproof bowl until thick and creamy. Slowly whisk in the hot milk.
  • Drizzle the milk mixture over the dates, sprinkle with sifted cinnamon, and place the dish in a larger baking dish. Carefully pour boiling water into the baking dish until it reaches halfway up the sides of the smaller dish. Bake for 45 minutes or until the mixture is just set. Remove the dish from the oven and water bath, allow to cool for 5 to 10 minutes, and serve with cream.
