Try this timeless family Christmas tradition: Grandma's simple recipe for classic cake donuts.
Ingredients:
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 cup vegetable oil for frying
Instructions:
  • Whip eggs in a stand mixer until creamy. Gradually blend in sugar until well combined. Add buttermilk and vanilla extract, then mix in butter.
  • In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking soda, baking powder, nutmeg, and salt. Gradually mix half of this dry mixture into the sugar mixture until well blended; then mix in the remaining half. Allow the batter to rest for 20 minutes.
  • Preheat oil in a deep-fryer or large saucepan to 375°F (190°C).
  • Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and gently knead until just combined. Roll out the dough with a rolling pin to a 3/8-inch thickness and cut into donut shapes.
  • Gently submerge the donuts in the hot oil and fry until golden brown, flipping once, for 2 to 3 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
