Creamy, cheesy green bean gratin with crispy breadcrumbs (or fried onions). No canned soup here!
Ingredients:
  • 10 slices bacon
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups frozen cut green beans
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup heavy cream
  • 0.75 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
  • 0.5 cup dry bread crumbs
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C) and grease a casserole dish.
  • Cook the bacon in a large skillet over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until it's evenly browned, which should take about 10 minutes.
  • While waiting, simmer water. Cook green beans until tender, for about 5 to 10 minutes. Save some of the bean cooking liquid. Drain bacon on paper towels, keep the skillet grease. Crumble the bacon.
  • In a saucepan, warm 3 tablespoons of the reserved grease. Mix in flour until well combined and golden in color. Slowly pour in reserved cooking liquid and cream, whisking continuously until the mixture is smooth and thick, for about 5 minutes. Gently mix in beans and Cheddar cheese. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and top with bread crumbs.
  • Bake uncovered in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes until hot and bubbling. Sprinkle with bacon before serving.
