Simmered green beans with pears and bacon, a flavorful German-inspired dish.
Ingredients:
  • 0.5 pound thick sliced bacon, cut into 1 inch pieces
  • 1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into 1 1/2-inch pieces
  • 3 Bosc pears, cored and cut into quarters
  • 1 quart water
  • salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
  • Fry the bacon in a spacious skillet over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until partially cooked but not browned, for 5 to 6 minutes. Place on paper towels to drain.
  • In a large saucepan, mix the crispy bacon, fresh green beans, and ripe pears. Add enough water to cover the ingredients. Bring to a boil, then simmer on low for 30 minutes until everything is cooked and tender.
  • Transfer to a serving dish using a slotted spoon to drain excess water. Season with salt and pepper before serving.
