Savory beef and onions cooked in a flavorful blend of soy sauce, sake, and brown sugar for delicious Japanese Gyudon bowls.
Ingredients:
  • 1 large white onion
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
  • 0.5 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon mirin
  • 1 tablespoon sake
  • 0.5 pound beef ribeye steak, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds, or to taste
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced, or to taste
  • 2 teaspoons pickled ginger (beni shoga), or to taste
  • 1 sheet dried seaweed, cut into strips, or to taste
Instructions:
  • Cut the onion in half, remove the central core, and thinly slice the halves.
  • In a hot skillet or wok, caramelize onion in oil for 30 seconds. Stir in water, soy sauce, brown sugar, mirin, and sake. Simmer on medium-low heat for 3 minutes to blend flavors.
  • Add the beef to the skillet and cover it to cook until the beef is fully cooked, which should take around 3 to 5 minutes. Serve the dish in individual bowls and top with sesame seeds, green onions, ginger, and seaweed strips for garnish.
