Discover gooey cheese and savory ham tucked beneath a golden crispy crust.
Ingredients:
  • Melted butter, to grease
  • 9.20 gm olive oil
  • 1 small brown onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves (optional), crushed
  • 10-12 slices wholemeal bread, crusts removed
  • 100g shaved ham
  • 70g (2/3 cup) coarsely grated cheddar
  • 3 eggs
  • 500ml (2 cups) milk
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 180°C and generously coat a shallow 1.5L (6-cup) ovenproof dish with melted butter.
  • In a medium frying pan over medium heat, sauté the onion in oil until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic for extra flavor, if desired, and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant. Let it cool slightly before using.
  • Cut each slice of bread in half diagonally for an elegant presentation. Layer half of the bread slices neatly on the bottom of the dish.
  • Layer the onion mixture and ham on top, followed by half of the cheddar cheese. Place the remaining bread on top, slightly overlapping. Finish off by sprinkling the rest of the cheddar on top.
  • Whisk eggs and milk in a jug, then pour over the bread. Let it sit for 15 minutes.
  • Place in the oven for 40-45 minutes, or until beautifully golden and fully set. Enjoy!
