Make a spooky gingerbread house with your loved ones using your favorite treats. A fun family activity!
Ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 3/4 cup full-flavor molasses
  • 1/3 cup cold water
  • 3 1/2 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • Assorted candies and cookies
  • 1 1/2 to 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1 tablespoon full-flavor molasses
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9-inch square pan and a 15x10x1-inch rectangular pan. In a large bowl, combine brown sugar, shortening, and molasses until fully blended. Mix in cold water, then add the rest of the gingerbread ingredients except candies. Press one-third of the dough into the square pan and the remaining dough into the rectangular pan.
  • Bake one pan at a time for approximately 15 minutes, or until the center springs back when touched. Let it cool for 5 minutes, then invert onto a large cutting surface. Cut out the house (and windows if preferred), supports, doors, and fence as per the provided diagram. Allow it to cool completely for about 25 minutes.
  • Combine 1 cup of powdered sugar and remaining frosting ingredients in a medium bowl until smooth. Add more powdered sugar as needed to achieve a stiff frosting consistency. Adjust by adding a little milk if frosting becomes too stiff.
  • Get creative with decoration using frosting, assorted candies, and cookies for the front of the house. Cut yellow tissue paper slightly larger than the window outlines. Brush paper with vegetable oil and stick it to the back side of the windows using frosting. Attach supports to the back of the house, sidewalk to the front of the house, door, sign, and fence to the sidewalk using frosting. Finish decorating to your liking.
