Introducing Herman, a versatile sweet sourdough starter that can be used in various recipes. Ready in just 15 days for your baking adventures.
Ingredients:
  • 2.25 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.25 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup white sugar, divided
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour, divided
  • 2 cups milk, divided
Instructions:
  • In a spacious glass or plastic container, combine yeast with warm water. Add flour and sugar, and mix until a smooth consistency forms (avoid using a metal spoon). Loosely cover the container and let it sit in a warm place overnight.
  • The following day, gently mix and chill in the refrigerator.
  • Give your mixture a gentle stir every day for the next four days. On the fifth day, stir it well, and then split it in half. Share one half with a friend along with feeding instructions.
  • Nourish the starter with 1/2 cup white sugar, 1 cup flour, and 1 cup milk until smooth. Cover and refrigerate. Stir gently daily for the next four days.
  • After ten days, add 1/2 cup white sugar, 1 cup flour, and 1 cup milk. Stir daily for the next four days. Place back in the refrigerator.
  • After 15 days, your sourdough starter is ready to bake with. Save 1 cup in the fridge, then maintain by stirring daily for 4 days, feeding on the fifth day, and using on the tenth day.
