Whip up easy homemade flour tortillas with just 4 simple ingredients, including water. No special tools required, ready in 1 hour with a short 30-minute rest. Enjoy fresh tortillas from your kitchen!
Ingredients:
  • 3/4 teaspoon fine table salt
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, vegetable shortening, or vegetable oil, at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon hot water
Instructions:
  • Prepare the dough: For hand mixing, combine flour and salt in a bowl. Add shortening, butter, or oil and blend with fingers until small bits form. Pour in water, mixing until combined. Adjust with more water if needed. Knead on a floured surface until smooth. For stand mixer method, mix flour and salt on low speed with paddle attachment. Add shortening or butter gradually or stream in oil until blended. Slowly pour in hot water, mixing into a dough. Adjust with more water if needed. Mix on medium-low speed for about 2 minutes until smooth.
  • Shape the tortillas: Sprinkle flour on a plate. Roll the dough into a cylinder, about 6-8 inches long. Cut into 4 equal pieces, then each piece in half, creating 8 pieces. Roll into balls and flatten into disks. Place on the plate, cover with plastic wrap, and let rest at room temperature for 30 minutes before rolling out.
  • Prepare the tortillas: Dust the work surface and rolling pin with flour. Roll each disk from the center towards the edges and back, rotating 45 degrees each time. Keep rolling and flipping the dough until each tortilla is about 7 inches wide. Stack the rolled tortillas between parchment or waxed paper. Rest them while you heat the pan.
  • Heat a cast iron pan or skillet over medium heat until hot. Place a tortilla on the pan and cook for about 30 seconds until light brown spots appear. Adjust the heat if needed to prevent burning. Flip and cook the other side for another 20-30 seconds until puffed up and opaque. If needed, cook for an extra 10-12 seconds. Transfer the cooked tortilla to a towel-lined plate and cover. Repeat with the remaining tortillas.
  • To steam the tortillas, wrap them in a cloth napkin and let them sit for 5 to 10 minutes before serving. If you plan to store them for later use, place the hot tortillas in an inside-out plastic zip-top bag and let them cool. When cool, flip the bag right side out, place the tortillas back inside, seal the bag, and pat the exterior dry with a dishtowel.
  • Keep the tortillas fresh by storing the tightly sealed bag in the refrigerator for up to four days or freezing for up to two months.
  • To reheat the tortillas, warm a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place each tortilla on the heated surface and cook for 10-12 seconds on each side until hot. Alternatively, you can microwave them for 15-20 seconds. Serve immediately.
