Fluffy homemade rolls make the perfect base for all your delicious burger creations.
Ingredients:
  • 3 tablespoons (42g) unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons (42g) honey
  • 1 cup (224g) buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs, divided
  • 3 1/4 to 3 1/2 cups (390g to 420g) all-purpose flour, divided
  • 1 tablespoon (9.3g) instant yeast
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons (8.5g) salt
  • 1 teaspoon (4g) vegetable or olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon (15g) water
Instructions:
  • In a Pyrex measuring cup, microwave the butter and honey in 10-second intervals for about 40 seconds until the butter melts. Then, add the buttermilk and 1 egg to the melted butter, and whisk with a fork until blended.
  • In a stand mixer with the paddle attachment, blend 2 1/2 cups of flour, yeast, and salt on low speed until combined.
  • Combine the buttermilk mixture with the flour mixture using a stand mixer until fully incorporated and the dough is soft and sticky. Beat on medium-high speed for 1 minute until the dough is soft and stretchy. Replace the paddle attachment with the dough hook and gradually add 3/4 cup of flour on low speed. Knead the dough for 8 minutes until it forms a ball that pulls away from the sides of the bowl, adding more flour if needed. Shape the dough into a ball.
  • Prepare for rising: In a large bowl, drizzle oil and spread it across the bottom. Add the dough ball and rotate to cover it with the oil. Seal with plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm spot until it doubles in size, approximately 1 1/2 hours.
  • Shape the rolls: Deflate the dough gently on a lightly floured board. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces like a pie. Shape each piece into a ball by drawing the edges towards the center and pinching to seal. Place the rolls seam side down on a lightly floured area and shape them into balls by moving in a circular motion on the board. Repeat with the remaining rolls, wiping off excess flour if needed.
  • Prepare for baking: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Gently flatten the rolls to be approximately 3 inches in diameter and arrange them on the prepared baking sheet with 3 inches of space between each. Loosely cover the rolls with plastic wrap and allow them to rise until they become puffy and almost double in size, around 1 hour. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 375ºF.
  • Prepare egg wash by whisking the remaining egg and 1 tablespoon of water until well mixed. Gently brush the rolls with the egg wash using a pastry brush, being careful not to deflate the dough.
  • Bake the bread until golden and cooked through, about 15 to 18 minutes. You can check by inserting an instant-read thermometer into the center; it should read 190°F. Once done, cool on a rack before slicing and serving at your next cookout!
