Indulge in luxurious hot chocolate made with real chocolate, whole milk, and vanilla, topped with whipped cream or marshmallows for the perfect cozy treat on chilly days.
Ingredients:
  • 4 cups whole milk (or another nondairy milk)
  • 8 ounces dark, semi-sweet, or bittersweet chocolate (60% cacao, preferably)
  • 3 teaspoons powdered sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
Instructions:
  • Chop the chocolate into fine pieces that dissolve easily in the liquid. Set aside.
  • Gently heat the milk in a small, thick-bottomed pot on low heat until it simmers. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. Optionally, infuse the milk with herbs or spices, steep for 10 minutes off the heat, strain, and return to a simmer.
  • Integrate the chocolate: Integrate the chocolate, vanilla, powdered sugar, and salt into the mixture, whisking vigorously until the chocolate is fully melted.
  • Continuously stir the chocolate over heat for 4 more minutes until it's fully melted. Stirring constantly ensures a smooth consistency.
  • Garnish with whipped cream: Pour into mugs and optionally add a splash of liquor. Finish with a dollop of whipped cream on top.
