Effortlessly make a decadent Mardi Gras king cake with a bread machine. Fill with cinnamon-pecan goodness, top with glaze and colorful sugar for a festive treat.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 0.25 cup warm water (100 to 110 degrees F/40 to 45 degrees C), or as needed
  • 2 tablespoons softened butter
  • 1 large egg, slightly beaten
  • 3.5 cups all-purpose flour, or as needed
  • 3.5 tablespoons white sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 2.5 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2.5 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 cup chopped pecans
  • 1.5 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 1.5 tablespoons melted butter
  • 0.125 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons milk, or as needed
  • 1 tablespoon purple colored sugar, or as needed
  • 1 tablespoon green colored sugar, or as needed
  • 1 tablespoon yellow colored sugar, or as needed
Instructions:
  • Prepare the dough: Add sour cream, warm water, softened butter, egg, flour, sugar, salt, and yeast into a bread machine following the specified order or per manufacturer instructions. Select the Dough cycle and let it run for approximately 90 minutes. Retrieve the dough from the machine when the cycle is complete.
  • Place the dough onto a dusted countertop; gently roll it into a 10x28-inch rectangle.
  • Prepare the filling by combining sugar, melted butter, and cinnamon in a bowl. Spread this delicious mixture over the dough, then generously sprinkle pecans on top. Roll the dough into a log, starting from a long edge. Place the log on a greased baking sheet with the seam side down to ensure a beautifully golden crust.
  • Dampen the edges of the dough log, bring the ends together to create a ring, and press firmly to close. Cover with a cloth and allow to double in size in a warm place, approximately 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to a toasty 375°F (190°C).
  • Bake the cake in the preheated oven until golden brown on top, approximately 15 minutes. Then, cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes before serving.
  • Once the cake has cooled, prepare the glaze by mixing confectioners' sugar, melted butter, and vanilla in a bowl. Add milk gradually until a smooth, thick glaze forms.
  • Drizzle warm cake with glaze, letting it cascade down the sides. Quickly sprinkle bands of purple, green, and yellow colored sugar on top. Let the cake cool completely before enjoying.
