Mom's classic meatball ingredients: ground beef, tomatoes, cheese, herbs, and eggs, transformed into a delicious dish using leftover bread.
Ingredients:
  • 8 ounces ground beef
  • 0.75 cup chopped onion
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 0.25 cup red wine
  • 0.25 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 0.33333334326744 cup half-and-half cream
  • 8 slices day-old bread, cubed
  • 0.5 cup low-sodium chicken broth
  • 0.25 cup grated Romano cheese
Instructions:
  • Cook the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat until crumbled. Add onions and garlic; cook and stir until browned. Remove excess fat. Mix in red wine, tomatoes, oregano, red pepper flakes, and sea salt. Boil, then simmer on low for 20 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) for the perfect cooking temperature.
  • Combine eggs, brown sugar, and half-and-half in a bowl. Place bread cubes in a 2 quart casserole dish. Pour in the egg mixture and chicken stock. Stir in ground beef mixture until bread is saturated. Sprinkle half of the Romano cheese on top.
  • Bake for 40 minutes in a preheated oven until the top turns golden and the center sets. Serve in individual bowls and sprinkle each with the remaining Romano cheese.
