Lean ground sirloin creates a meaty Salisbury steak with savory mushroom-onion gravy.
Ingredients:
  • 1 pound ground sirloin
  • 0.5 cup panko bread crumbs
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 0.5 (1 ounce) package dry onion soup mix
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cups fresh mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 sweet onion, sliced
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups beef stock
  • 1 cup water
  • salt and ground black pepper to taste
Instructions:
  • Combine ground sirloin, panko bread crumbs, egg, milk, 1/2 packet of onion soup mix, Worcestershire sauce, and black pepper in a large bowl. Shape the mixture into 5 patties.
  • Preheat skillet over medium heat. Brown patties in the hot skillet for 3 to 5 minutes on each side.
  • Prepare the gravy: In a separate skillet, melt the butter over medium-high heat. Cook the mushrooms and onion in the butter until tender, around 5 minutes. Stir in the flour and the remaining 1/2 packet of onion soup mix. Slowly pour in the beef stock and water while stirring constantly until it simmers. Lower the heat to medium and cook, stirring often, until the gravy thickens (about 4 to 5 minutes). Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Simmer the browned patties in the gravy until very tender, about 30 minutes, ensuring they reach an internal temperature of 160°F (70°C) when tested with an instant-read thermometer.
