Chewy, crackly top cookies - ideal for snacking with cold milk after school.
Ingredients:
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup mild-flavor molasses or full-flavor molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 2 1/4 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Granulated sugar
Instructions:
  • In a large bowl, thoroughly combine shortening, brown sugar, molasses, and egg. Stir in all remaining ingredients except granulated sugar. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before proceeding.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F and grease a cookie sheet. Form the dough into 1 1/4-inch balls, dip the tops in granulated sugar, and place them on the sheet, sugar side up, 3 inches apart. Lightly sprinkle each ball with 2 or 3 drops of water before baking.
  • Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until just set, then transfer to a wire rack.
