Warm up with a cozy twist on classic Spanish sangria for the chilly weather.
Ingredients:
  • 100g (1/2 cup) caster sugar
  • 125ml (1/2 cup) strained fresh orange juice
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 star anise
  • 3 whole cloves
  • 750ml bottle red wine
  • 60ml (1/4 cup) port or brandy
  • 1 orange, quartered, sliced
  • 2 small pears, sliced
  • Fresh rosemary sprigs, to serve (optional)
Instructions:
  • In a small saucepan, mix sugar, orange juice, and 180ml (3/4 cup) water. Stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves. Add cinnamon, star anise, and cloves, then bring to a simmer. Simmer on low heat for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in red wine and port. Let it sit for 20 minutes to enhance the flavors.
  • Warm the mixture over low heat, or serve at room temperature. Pour into a heatproof jug, add sliced orange and pear, and serve in heatproof glasses garnished with rosemary sprigs, if desired.
