Indulge in juicy strawberries nestled between buttery homemade shortcake layers, tailor the sweetness to your taste with ripe berries.
Ingredients:
  • 1 quart strawberries, sliced
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.33333334326744 cup vegetable shortening
  • 1.5 cups milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1 cup whipped cream
Instructions:
  • Combine fresh, juicy strawberries with a cup of sugar in a bowl. Let it sit while you finish the rest of the recipe, giving it an occasional stir to help the natural juices develop.
  • Preheat your oven to a toasty 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and generously grease an 8-inch round baking pan.
  • In a bowl, mix flour, 2 tablespoons of sugar, baking powder, and salt together. Add shortening and work it into the dry ingredients using a knife or pastry blender until it resembles coarse crumbs. Pour in milk and stir until just combined. Transfer the mixture into a prepared baking pan.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before removing the shortcake.
  • Divide shortcake in half horizontally. Smooth 2 tablespoons of softened butter on the bottom half and top with strawberries and their juice. Place the top half over the strawberries. Serve alongside whipped cream.
