Make a stunning ombre cake with gradient buttercream frosting.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 lb (about 1 1/8 cups) shortening
  • 2 lb powdered sugar
  • 5 to 6 tablespoons milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • Betty Crocker™ blue classic gel food color (or other desired color)
Instructions:
  • Assuming you have an 8- or 9-inch 4-layer cake, make sure it's frosted between layers with your favorite white buttercream frosting. Then, frost it thinly on the outside and top to seal in the crumbs.
  • In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to blend butter and shortening until smooth. Mix in powdered sugar on low speed until crumbly. Slowly pour in milk and vanilla while continuing to mix until the frosting is light and fluffy.
  • Divide 1 cup of frosting into each of 3 small bowls. Then, place 2 cups of frosting into a fourth bowl and stir in 1/8 teaspoon of blue food color using a whisk or fork.
  • Stir in additional food color to each of the next three bowls of frosting to gradually deepen the shade. Mix thoroughly with a whisk or fork. As a result, you will have four bowls of frosting, each a unique hue of the same color.
  • Frost the bottom third of the cake with the darkest blue frosting, followed by the next darkest shade in the middle third, and the next shade on the upper third. Finish by spreading the lightest blue frosting on the top of the cake.
