Ingredients:
  • 18 ice-cream cones with flat bottoms
  • 2 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup finely crushed orange-flavored hard candy
  • 1 cup orange-flavored soda pop
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated orange peel
  • 1 tub (16 oz) Betty Crocker™ Rich & Creamy Vanilla Frosting
  • Additional finely crushed orange-flavored hard candy, if desired
  • 9 orange candy cane sticks or plastic straws
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Stand the cones upright in medium muffin cups that are 2 1/2x1 1/4 inches, or in a rectangular pan that is 13x9x2 inches.
  • In a medium bowl, use an electric mixer to beat together flour, sugar, shortening, 1/4 cup of crushed candy, soda pop, baking powder, baking soda, salt, orange peel, and eggs on low speed for 30 seconds, scraping the bowl occasionally. Increase speed to medium and beat for 2 minutes, scraping the bowl occasionally. Fill each cone nearly to the top with the batter.
  • Bake for 20 to 23 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean. Then, gently remove the cones from the muffin cups and allow to cool completely on a wire rack for about 1 hour.
  • Combine the frosting with the remaining 1/4 cup of crushed candy. Spread this mixture over the cupcakes, then sprinkle with more candy. Cut or break the candy sticks in half and insert them into each frosted cupcake cone.
