Create vibrant peppermint swirled cookies by twisting colored dough ropes.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 1/3 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon red food color
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. In a large bowl, cream together butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla using an electric mixer or a spoon. Mix in the flour. Split the dough in half. Add peppermint extract and food coloring to one half of the dough. Divide each colored dough in half.
  • On a well-floured surface, shape each piece of dough into a 12-inch rope. Place one red and one white rope next to each other, then twist them together. Repeat the process with the remaining two pieces of dough.
  • Cut the twisted ropes into 1/2-inch pieces and shape each piece into a ball. Arrange the balls about 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Flatten each ball to about 1/4-inch thickness using the bottom of a greased glass dipped in granulated sugar.
  • Bake cookies for 7 to 9 minutes until set, then transfer to wire rack to cool.
