Total Time:
Classic Italian cookies rolled in sesame seeds and infused with fragrant anise.
Ingredients:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.25 teaspoon baking soda
  • 0.75 cup lard
  • 0.75 cup white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon anise seed, crushed
  • 1 cup sesame seeds, toasted
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to a toasty 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) while you prepare your cookie sheets by giving them a light greasing.
  • Combine flour, baking soda, and salt in a bowl and set aside. In another bowl, mix lard and sugar until creamy. Add egg and anise seeds, then mix well. Incorporate dry ingredients, and blend thoroughly. Place sesame seeds in a shallow bowl. Shape dough into 1-inch balls, coat them with sesame seeds, and space them 1 1/2 inches apart on baking sheets. Gently press down on each ball with the bottom of a glass to flatten.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 6 to 9 minutes until golden. Cool on wire racks, then store in an airtight container.
