Achieve perfect caramelized edges on your apple crisp by uncovering the slow cooker for the final hour of cooking.
Ingredients:
  • 0.66666668653488 cup white sugar, or to taste
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 4 teaspoons apple pie spice, divided
  • 12 cups peeled, cored, and chopped apples
  • 0.25 cup lemon juice
  • 1 (18.25 ounce) package yellow cake mix
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter, melted
Instructions:
  • Mix sugar, cornstarch, and 2 teaspoons of apple pie spice in a small bowl.
  • In a large slow cooker, add apples and gently mix in the spices. Drizzle with lemon juice and toss to coat evenly.
  • Combine cake mix, brown sugar, and remaining apple pie spice in a medium bowl. Mix in melted butter until fully incorporated; the mixture will be crumbly. Sprinkle over the apples in the cooker.
  • Cook the apples until tender by covering them on Low for 4 hours or on High for 2 hours. Then, partially uncover the slow cooker and cook for an additional hour until the topping has hardened.
