Slow cooker maple-butter pears: A showstopping dessert!
Ingredients:
  • 6 pears
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup maple-flavored syrup
  • 1 tablespoon butter or margarine, melted
  • 1 teaspoon orange peel
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice
Instructions:
  • Peel the pears, core them from the bottom while keeping the stems intact, and stand them upright in a 3 1/2- to 5-quart slow cooker.
  • Combine all other ingredients, excluding cornstarch and orange juice, and drizzle the mixture over the pears.
  • Cook on high heat setting, covered, until tender, for 2 to 2 1/2 hours.
  • Take out the pears from the cooker and elegantly arrange them standing upright in a serving dish or individual dessert dishes.
  • Combine cornstarch and orange juice, then incorporate into the sauce in the cooker. Cook covered on high for approximately 10 minutes until sauce thickens. Drizzle sauce over pears. Note: This recipe was developed for slow cookers with heating elements in the side and bottom of the cooker, not for cookers that only have a heated base. If using a cooker with only a heated base, follow the manufacturer's instructions for layering ingredients and selecting a temperature.
