Somali-style beef spaghetti with flavorful turmeric sauce, perfect for a satisfying weeknight meal.
Ingredients:
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Himalayan pink salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon salt-free seasoning blend (such as Mrs. Dash®)
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 0.25 cup olive oil
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 large potato, peeled and cubed
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 (14 ounce) cans diced tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons water, or to taste
  • 1 (16 ounce) package angel hair pasta
Instructions:
  • Combine fresh cilantro and garlic in a food processor; pulse until finely minced.
  • Toast cumin seeds in a small pot over low heat until fragrant, about 2 to 3 minutes. Let them cool for 5 minutes, then grind into a powder.
  • Combine ground cumin, Himalayan pink salt, turmeric, paprika, Italian seasoning, seasoning blend, and black pepper in a small bowl to create the seasoning mix.
  • In a large pot over medium heat, warm the oil. Cook ground beef until browned, approximately 5 minutes. Mix in 1/2 of the seasoning. Add onion; cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in the potato and carrots. Cover and cook, stirring occasionally, until slightly softened, roughly 5 minutes.
  • Combine tomatoes in the pot, allowing the sauce to reach a boil. Lower the heat to medium-low and mix in the cilantro-garlic blend and the remaining seasoning. Simmer and occasionally stir for 30 to 40 minutes until flavors meld together. Add water to thin out the sauce if needed.
  • 1. Boil a pot of salted water. Add angel hair pasta and cook until al dente, about 4 to 5 minutes. Drain and toss with your favorite sauce.
