Create tangy, chewy sourdough bread at home with just 4 simple ingredients: yeast, water, flour, and sugar. Follow our easy starter recipe and care instructions to enjoy homemade bread anytime.
Ingredients:
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons bread machine or quick active dry yeast
  • 4 cups lukewarm water (105°F to 115°F)
  • 3 cups Gold Medal™ All-Purpose Flour or Gold Medal™ Bread Flour
  • 4 teaspoons sugar
Instructions:
  • In a large glass bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add flour and sugar, then beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for about 1 minute until smooth. Cover loosely and let it sit at room temperature for about 1 week until bubbly and fragrant. Transfer to a 2-quart or larger nonmetal bowl with a tight-fitting lid and refrigerate until ready to use. To care for your Sourdough Starter, use it once a week or stir in 1 teaspoon of sugar. After using, replenish by stirring in 3/4 cup Gold Medal® all-purpose flour, 3/4 cup water, and 1 teaspoon sugar until smooth. Cover loosely, let it sit in a warm place for at least 1 day until bubbly, then refrigerate until ready to use again.
