Traditional Southern collard greens slow-cooked with savory ham hocks for luck in the New Year.
Ingredients:
  • 2 medium sweet onions, finely chopped
  • 2 smoked ham hocks
  • 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 3 (32 ounce) containers chicken broth
  • 3 (1 pound) packages collard greens, trimmed
  • 0.33333334326744 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt, or to taste
  • 0.75 teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste
Instructions:
  • Assemble all ingredients.
  • In a stockpot, unite onions, ham hocks, and garlic. Pour in chicken broth. Simmer over medium heat until the meat is tender and easily removed from the bone, lasting 1 to 2 hours.
  • Combine collard greens, vinegar, sugar, salt, and pepper into the broth; simmer until the greens are tender, approximately 2 hours more.
