Sparkling strawberry basil sangria: a refreshing blend of fresh strawberry puree, basil simple syrup, and fizz, perfect for sipping on a hot day!
Ingredients:
  • 1 lemon
  • 2 pounds strawberries, divided
  • 3/4 cup sugar, divided
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup packed basil (about 10 large leaves) + more for garnish
  • 2 bottles of Prosecco or sparkling wine, chilled
  • 1 1/2 cups elderflower liqueur, such as St. Germain
  • Club soda (optional)
Instructions:
  • Peel the lemon with a vegetable peeler, making sure to only remove the yellow part of the skin. Juice the lemons to get 2 tablespoons of juice, saving the rest for later use. Set aside the lemon zest for the simple syrup.
  • Prepare the strawberries: Cut half of the strawberries (1 pound) into quarters and mix them with 1/2 cup of sugar and 2 tablespoons of lemon juice in a medium bowl. Allow them to macerate at room temperature for 30 minutes to 2 hours while you prepare the Basil Simple Syrup.
  • Prepare the basil simple syrup by heating 1/4 cup water and 1/4 cup sugar in a saucepan until the sugar dissolves, about 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in 1/4 cup basil, crushing it slightly with a muddler. Add lemon zest strips. Let the syrup cool for 20 to 30 minutes to enhance flavors. Strain, discard basil, and save lemon zest. Refrigerate syrup for up to a week.
  • Blend the macerated strawberries and their juices in a blender or food processor until smooth. Strain the puree and it can be chilled for up to a day.
  • Prepare the sangria: Set aside 10 small strawberries for garnish. Slice the rest of the strawberries, then combine them with strawberry puree, basil lemon syrup, and elderflower liqueur in a large pitcher. Mix well before adding Prosecco, sliced strawberries, basil leaves, and lemon peels. Stir the mixture thoroughly.
  • To serve and garnish, fill glasses with ice and pour sangria. Top each glass with a fresh basil leaf and add a small strawberry with a slit on the rim. For a lighter option, add club soda to balance sweetness or dilute alcohol. Enjoy!
