Easily satisfy all tastes with this flavorful Asian dish, balancing salty, sweet, sour, and spicy flavors.
Ingredients:
  • 80ml (1/3 cup) kecap manis
  • 18.20 gm peanut oil
  • 4cm-piece fresh ginger, peeled, cut into matchsticks
  • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 1 small fresh red chilli, thinly sliced
  • 2 brown onions, halved, cut into thick wedges
  • 700g pork rashers, cut into 3cm pieces
  • 60ml (1/4 cup) soy sauce
  • 3 whole star anise
  • 16.00 gm brown sugar
  • 2 tsp Chinese five spice
  • 1 lemon, halved, juiced, halves reserved
  • 800ml beef stock
  • Steamed Asian greens, to serve
  • 600g (3 cups) white long-grain rice
  • 12.00 gm sesame seeds
  • 20.00 ml sesame oil
Instructions:
  • Preheat a wok over high heat until hot. Add oil and heat until it shimmers. Quickly stir-fry ginger, garlic, and chili until fragrant, about 5-10 seconds. Toss in the onion and stir-fry for 1 minute until tender.
  • Add the pork to the skillet and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden brown, about 4-5 minutes.
  • Pour in the kecap manis, soy sauce, star anise, brown sugar, and Chinese five spice, and stir-fry for 1 minute. Next, incorporate the lemon juice, lemon halves, and stock, then simmer for 25 minutes until the pork is tender.
  • Discard the lemon halves and plate the pork. Cover with foil to keep warm. Let the soy sauce mixture come to a boil and simmer for 15-20 minutes until slightly thickened. Add the pork back to the wok and stir over medium heat until heated through.
  • Prepare the sesame rice by cooking the rice according to the package instructions, while incorporating sesame seeds and sesame oil at the beginning of the cooking process.
  • Arrange the rice, Asian greens, and pork in individual serving dishes, then generously drizzle the sauce over the top.
