Traditional German springerle cookies, a cherished family recipe for over 30 years. Perfect for creating lasting memories.
Ingredients:
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.25 cup anise seed
Instructions:
  • Whisk eggs in a large mixing bowl until pale and fluffy.
  • Combine the sugar and butter, then beat until light and fluffy.
  • Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt, then incorporate into mixture.
  • Knead the dough until smooth, adding extra flour as needed to achieve the desired texture.
  • Chill dough in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, covered.
  • Roll the dough on a lightly floured surface to 1/2 inch thickness. Use a springerle roller to add designs, then cut out the cookies. Sprinkle anise seed on a clean tea towel and place the cookies on top. Let them stand uncovered overnight to dry.
  • Bake at 325 degrees F (170 degrees C) for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
  • Allow to cool completely before transferring to an airtight tin container. The flavor will intensify over time as the cookies absorb more of the anise aroma.
