Flaky Swedish kringle with buttery almond filling and sweet almond icing is an irresistible treat for breakfast or dessert.
Ingredients:
  • 1 tablespoon water, or as needed
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 1 tablespoon heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon butter, softened
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) for the perfect cooking temperature.
  • Prepare the dough by combining 1/2 cup of butter with 1 cup of flour using a knife or pastry blender. Add 1 tablespoon of water, or more if needed, and blend until crumbly with pea-sized chunks. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to a width of 3 to 4 inches, then transfer it to a rectangular cookie sheet.
  • Prepare the filling by boiling 1 cup of water and 1/2 cup of butter in a small saucepan. Take it off the heat and stir in 1 cup of flour until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, ensuring they are well mixed after each addition. Add 1 teaspoon of almond extract and spread the filling over the dough.
  • Place in the oven that has been preheated to the perfect temperature and let it bake for 55 to 60 minutes. Witness the pastry gracefully sink a bit as it cools.
  • Prepare the icing by mixing together confectioners' sugar, cream, 1 tablespoon of butter, and the remaining 1 teaspoon of almond extract.
  • Take the kringle out of the oven and promptly cover it with icing.
