Try Chef John's flavorful Banh Mi Burger, a fusion of a banh mi sandwich and a grilled burger with homemade sauce and classic toppings.
Ingredients:
  • 1 pound ground beef chuck
  • 1 teaspoon fish sauce
  • 0.5 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 0.13 teaspoon five-spice powder
  • 0.25 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 2 teaspoons Sriracha
  • 2 French sandwich rolls
  • 0.5 cup julienned carrot
  • 0.5 cup julienned daikon radish
  • 1 tablespoon seasoned rice vinegar
  • 8 thin slices English cucumber
  • 2 tablespoons sliced jalapeno pepper, or to taste
  • 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro leaves, or to taste
Instructions:
  • Assemble all your ingredients.
  • Mix beef, fish sauce, soy sauce, freshly ground black pepper, and 5-spice powder in a bowl until well combined. Chill in the refrigerator with plastic wrap covering until cold.
  • Combine mayonnaise, hoisin sauce, and Sriracha in a small bowl to make the sauce. Chill until ready to use. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with foil.
  • Slice the rolls open, scoop out half of the inside crumb, and arrange them on the baking sheet.
  • Toast rolls in the oven until golden, for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Shape the beef mixture into two burger patties using damp hands, making sure they match the size of your rolls or buns. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  • Mix together the carrots and daikon radish in a bowl. Drizzle with rice vinegar and mix well to ensure they are evenly coated. Chill in the refrigerator until ready to use.
  • Fire up the charcoal grill until it's sizzling hot.
  • Grill burgers over hot coals until they spring back to the touch and reach desired doneness, about 4 minutes per side for medium-rare. Check with an instant-read thermometer - centers should reach at least 145°F (63°C).
  • Spread the mayo mixture on the toasted buns. Layer the bottom rolls with cucumbers and jalapeno slices, then add the cooked burgers on top. Finish with the carrot-radish mixture and fresh cilantro.
  • Indulge and savor your creation!
