Ingredients:
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cupshortening
1/4 cupbutter or margarine, softened
1/2 teaspoonvanilla
1egg, separated
1cupGold Medal™ all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoonsalt
3/4 cupfinely choppednuts

Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 350°F.
Combine the brown sugar, shortening, butter, vanilla, and egg yolk in a medium bowl. Mix in the flour and salt until a cohesive dough forms.
Roll the dough into 1-inch balls. Gently beat the egg white. Dip each ball into the egg white, then coat with nuts. Arrange the balls 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Press your thumb deeply into the center of each ball.
Bake for approximately 10 minutes until golden brown. Transfer to a wire rack immediately. Allow to cool completely for about 30 minutes. Fill thumbprints with jelly.
